Unveiling the Confusion of Rakshabandhan on Date and Time

Raksha Bandhan is one of the popular festivals of India, celebrated by Hindus around the world. The festival symbolizes the bond of love and protection between brothers and sisters. Sisters tie a rakhi on their brother’s wrist and in return, the brother promises to protect his sister. Hence Raksha Bandhan is a time of joy, love and tradition between siblings.

The festival of Rakshabandhan is celebrated every year on the full moon date of the month of Shravan according to the Hindu calendar.

According to the Hindu calendar, this year also the festival of Rakshabandhan will be celebrated on the full moon date of the month of Shravan, which starts from 10.58 am on 30th August and ends at 7.05 am on 31st August. Since we all use the English-calendar, therefore according to the Hindu calendar, the Purnima Tithi which is only of 1 day appears to us to be of 2 days. Due to which it has become a matter of great confusion for the general public whether Raksha Bandhan should be celebrated on 30th August or on 31st August. Apart from this, there is a confusion that Bhadra Kaal is also there because there is Bhadra Kaal in this full moon date. Such a description is found in the scriptures that even by mistake the festival of Raksha Bandhan should not be celebrated in the Bhadra period.
Friends, this time most scholars and astrologers are of the opinion that Raksha Bandhan should be celebrated on 30th August, yet some scholars and astrologers are also of the opinion of celebrating Raksha Bandhan on 31st August. So today we will tell you in this video that on which day the festival of Rakshabandhan will be celebrated and according to the English calendar what will be its correct date 30th August or 31st August. Also we will tell you who is Bhadra? And what is Bhadra Kaal and how long is it? What will be the effect of accompanying Bhadra on Raksha Bandhan.

To remove the confusions arising on the festival of Rakshabandhan, first of all understand the date because this is the root of all confusions.

In the Vedas, that which is called Ahoratra, is considered as a Tithi. According to astrology, after the confluence of the Sun and the Moon on Amavasya, when the Moon goes 12 degrees above the Sun, the time it takes to go there is called Tithi. When the Moon moves 12 degrees above the Sun, the first Tithi is Pratipada, similarly, when the Moon reaches 180 degrees while increasing in Dwitiya, Tritiya, Chaturthi etc., then there is a full moon. And when it reaches 360 degrees, then again there is a confluence of the moon and the sun, that is, it is a new moon day. According to the Hindu calendar, the Tithi can start anytime during the day or night.

Now we understand Bhadra that who is Bhadra? And what is Bhadra Kaal and what is its duration? Why Bhadra is considered inauspicious? Surya Dev had two daughters. One’s name was Kalindi and the other’s name was Bhadra. Kalindi was very calm in nature and Bhadra was also harsh and fierce in nature like her brother Shani. Lord Brahma has given a special place to Bhadra in the Panchang. Hindu Panchang is divided into 5 main parts – Tithi, Vaar, Yoga, Nakshatra and Karan. There are 11 Karanas in it, out of which the name of 7th Karana Vishti has been mentioned as Bhadra. According to the Hindu Panchang, special attention is paid to the Bhadra period in the Rakshabandhan Muhurta. It is believed that the time of Bhadra is very inauspicious for tying Rakhi. The reason behind this is the stories related to Lord Shiva and Ravana.

Let us know, according to mythology, why Rakhi is not tied during the Bhadra period? According to mythology, it is said that Shurpanakha had tied Rakhi to her brother Lankapati Ravana during the Bhadra period itself, due to which Ravana’s entire clan was destroyed and Ravana also ended. For this reason, Rakhi should not be tied during Bhadrakal. At the same time, it is also said that Lord Shiva performs Tandav during Bhadra period and he is very angry, so if any auspicious work is done at that time, then he will have to face the anger of Lord Shiva. Even good things can go bad. Traveling and auspicious work etc. are considered inauspicious during the Bhadra period.
The festival of Raksha Bandhan is a symbol of unbreakable love between brother and sister. On this day sister ties Raksha Sutra, which is a sacred thread or talisman, around her brother’s wrist, this Raksha Sutra is a symbol of their love and protection as well as his brother’s love. Wishes for long life and healthy life. And the brother also promises to protect his sister. And gives them gifts as a token of their affection.

Raksha Bandhan is not only a celebration of brother and sister but also of family and culture. It strengthens the ties between relatives and friends and promotes a sense of harmony and unity in society. It also reflects the values of respect, care, and duty, which are essential for any relationship.

Friends, let us tell you again that tying rakhi during the Bhadra period is said to be inauspicious in the scriptures, so do not tie the Raksha Sutra to your brother during the Bhadra period, even by mistake. It is believed that evil spirits are more active during this time, so it is best to avoid any important events or auspicious work.

Friends, before knowing the exact date and proper time of Raksha Bandhan, also know the legends related to Raksha Bandhan. There is a story about Draupadi and Krishna in the Mahabharata epic. When Krishna injured his finger while using his celestial wheel, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari and tied it around his wound to stop the bleeding. Krishna was impressed by her gesture and vowed to protect her from any danger. He later fulfilled his promise by saving her from being humiliated by an act of ragging in an assembly full of Kauravas.

Similarly, another legend is of Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun in medieval times. When the widowed Rani Karnavati of Chittor faced danger from Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, she sent a rakhi to Emperor Humayun to ask for help. Humayun was moved by his request and rushed to his aid with his army. However, he arrived too late and found that Rani Karnavati had committed Jauhar i.e. self-immolation, along with other women to avoid being captured by the enemy. Humayun then fought against Bahadur Shah and got the kingdom back to the son of Rani Karnavati.

These legends reflect the power and importance of Rakhi as a symbol of protection, obligation and care. Raksha Bandhan is not just a ritual, but a way of life that honors the sacred bond between brothers and sisters.

Let us end the wait and find out on which date Raksha Bandhan should be celebrated. August 30 is the full moon date according to the Hindu lunar calendar, which is the main day to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. However, Bhadra Kaal is an inauspicious time period, that is considered taboo for any auspicious ceremony. According to mythological belief, afternoon time is auspicious for tying Rakhi, but if there is Bhadra Kaal from noon to sunset, then it is auspicious to tie Rakhi during Pradosh Kaal. Since August 30, Bhadra Kaal will start from 5:30 PM and end at 9:01 PM. That’s why the auspicious time to tie Rakhi in Pradosh Kaal i.e. on 30th August is best after 9:01 pm.

If you are unable to tie Rakhi on 30th August due to Bhadra Kaal, and believe in calculating Tithi according to Uday Tithi then you can also tie it on 31st August as Purnima Tithi falls on 31st August till 7:05 am Is.
